A baby monitor sounds like a great idea. I let my kids camp in the back yard but I really don`t remember how old they were. We have done it as adults too just for fun.

A few years ago in UK a girl aged about 10 was abducted while sleeping in a tent in the garden with friends. It is unlikely to happen, but it is always something to keep in mind.

You know what? The National Wildlife Federation is sponsoring the Great American Backyard Campout on June 27th, so maybe you should do the backyard thing then, too!
The website is Great American Backyard Campout - National Wildlife Federation.

Have fun!

That is a nice idea, thank you for making us aware of the website. I guess you would see some interesting wildlife at night.

I think this is the best idea. Especially since as you said your in the middle of nowhere, so I'm guessing space isn't too much of an issue. You wouldn't have to be right on top of them and they could feel like they had their own space. That way you could do a fire and maybe make smores(which is personally, my favorite part of camping).

I'm a bit over-protective, but I probably wouldn't feel comfortable with them being outside alone until they were maybe 11 or 12.
