Most places will not let someone go out by themselves if they don't know how to ride. But you can go on a guided trail ride if you have never ridden before. Just let them know you have no experience, and they will pick out a horse for you that will take care of you.

In terms of your boyfriend's enjoyment, he really should have a few lessons before going on a trail, he will feel safer and he will get more out of the experience. Remember that after a long ride people who don't ride often will feel very stiff and will have aching muscles in places that they didn't know existed!

Deltic is right, I think it would be much more enjoyable if you both had a few sessions riding a horse before you go on the trails. You will feel more confident and safer.

I think it would be unwise to go out on a guided trail ride without ever having ridden before. I think Deltic is wise to suggest a few sessions on a horse before you go, your boyfriend would certainly enjoy it more. Please remember that accidents can happen even with placid horses, a fall can lead to a broken bone or bad bruising and it could spoil the employment of the rest of the holiday. Having said all that horse riding is a fantastic way to enjoy the countryside so don't be put off, just plan carefully.
