Default Old Town Penobscot

Just got my new canoe and took it for a spin near Charlotte.

I love how this thing glides through the water. Feels more like a kayak than a canoe as far as speed goes.

New,
Congratulations. You have a real canoe and one I have always had my eye on. They are fast and handle rough water with plenty of room. Did you get the 16 or 17? I like the red color because it is easy to see if the boat turns over. I like the wood trim and having 3 thwarts. The vinyl gunwales are very practical because the wood ones tend to split over the winter. You did good.

Hi...

Super interesting...congrats. Looks like it is quite stable, also.

Not really familiar with that one, but it looks nice. Seems similar to my Old Town Acadia, except for the woven seats.

That looks like a lovely place to canoe, too. Is that a lake, stream or river that you're paddling onto? Made me wish I was there after the chilly day we've had today.

Chilly and wet here in West Virginia, too. We needed that rain though, the woods were tinder-dry. Hope the weekend is decent, I'm getting that itch to be out paddilng stronger every day!

Beautiful canoe and paddles. When do you leave on your big trip?

I got the 17RX (the Royalex hull knocks about 20 lbs off the weight). The gunwales are actually anodized aluminum. I really like the tall sides, it keeps the waves from splashing over as often when the wind picks up (or the idiots in speed boats don't slow down).

This is the northwestern tip of Mountain Island Lake near Huntersville, NC. What you're seeing is a sand bar near the Catawba River that's now under water.

Unfortunately the Mississippi River trip will have to be pushed back until Next August. I got blitzed by an infection in February that had me hospitalized for three days and caused me to miss almost 2 weeks of work. Much of the money for the trip is beings paid to the hospital. But it's not off, just delayed a bit. That canoe will see all of the nation's largest river.

WV,
The Acadia is a down river boat with more rocker than the Penobscot. It is slightly shorter, with fuller ends (less shear). The Acadia is a great river boat, but the Penobscot is faster on the flats and still can handle fast water. If I were going to buy a Penobscot it would be the 17 footer, more room and speed, and it would be in Royalex for durability.
