Default Had Some Trouble At Home

My wife called me yesterday at work and told me she had something to tell me and she was OK and the pets were OK. Then she told me the air conditioner in the bedroom window caught on fire. Actually the cord was what caught on fire. She ran to the breaker box and pulled the breaker and the fire was easily put out. It didn't cause too much of a burn on the carpet but it sure did cause a lot of smoke. I was scared to death after she told me but I didn't say anything. She told me everything was fine and I didn't have to come home. I just thank the Big Guy that she was home or we would have been out a house and 2 dogs.

Hi...

Your wife certainly did the right thing. That cord had gotten extremely hot. Was it also plugged into an extension cord?

And yes, lots more damage could have happened if she wasn't there.

Smart, brave wife and lucky you. It could have been a disaster without her quick thinking. Hope the smoke smell clears quickly.

It sounds like you really got lucky. How old was the air conditioner? We have a window unit in our bathroom that provides air to the master bedroom.

Glad you are all OK. It's good that your wife knew where the breaker box was and that she thought quickly enough to go there and shut it down.

Happy to hear everything is ok, although sad to hear about the a/c unit. I always worry about a fire when I'm not home with my dogs. My only hope is they can make it out somehow.

Nice to know she put it out. I had a similar event in my apartment long time ago. Synthetic drapes caught on fire. Me and my father tried to put them out without fire extinguishers. There was a lot of damage to the walls, carpet and our hands. The stench was impossible to get rid of even after a few weeks.

Make sure a professional electrician takes a look at the wiring before you use it again.
Don't use that circuit till it gets looked at!!!!
Glad the damage was minimal, happy you guys didn't loose everything.
