| Wow I've had a busy few days and haven't made it to the thread, but I'll get one last tip in under the wire.
When using snow for your water source in winter, be sure to put a little water in the pot with the snow before heating. If you put snow in a pot by itself to heat/melt, the resulting water tastes scorched. I don't know why, but it does. If you add some water with the snow before turning the stove on, it tastes fine. So don't wait until your water is completely gone before you start melting the next batch. And don't under estimate how much fuel you'll need for melting snow. It takes a surprising quantity of snow to produce enough water to stay sufficiently hydrated,a nd hydration is crucial to avoiding hypothermia.
