The Smokemont campground is closest to the Cherokee, NC entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about 6 miles up Newfound Gap Road (US 441). This is the third largest campground in terms of number of sites, with 142 tent and RV sites. The campground has running water and toilets but no showers. Potable water and a dump station are there for RVs but there are no electrical hookups.
The campground is divided into loops and generator use is restricted to two loops during the height of camping season so that people have the option to place themselves away from the noise. Individual campsites at Smokemont are fairly standard with a paved drive for RVs no longer than 40 feet and trailers no longer than 35 feet, picnic table, fire pit with a grill grate attached and campsites on loops A-C also include a tent pad. Loops D and F can be used by people who need a generator during generator-restricted time period from May to October.
