I've been to sites like that and cannot stand that mentality. I guess they were from kids who were picked on as a child, so now they are keyboard warriors.

I just provided the platform, the users have made it a community.

Very true, Jason. I went on a rant once, shortly after joining this site just to see how people would react. They took it with aplomb and remained civil. Most are difficult to offend because they think before they write. That is what makes this site unique-rational thought. Even ppine.

(Ppine: that was a joke.)

Dino,
There is nothing you could say to offend me by now. I know how you really are and you don't need to change a thing. It is interesting that since members here are in the business of exchanging ideas and sharing stories that we know each other fairly well considering that we have never met. I have some friends in a large social group that I have gone to parties with for years that I really don't know much about on this level.

People will be people wherever they are gathered. I do think like-minded people gravitate toward each other. Isn't it nice that the good folks have gravitated to this site and stayed? The meanies will probably be moving on once they encounter the hospitality here. Welcome to a great people place.

Civilization in this forum is definitely a plus. A few of the other forums I was in before had a lot of nasty people that really should've kept their opinions to themselves.

One thing I have learned, there are many ways to do things successfully. There is absolutely no reason for a person who prefers one method to criticize another method.
Whether it is rolling up in a blanket, using a tent, a tarp, or a hammock is personal preference and/or locality required. There are many ways to make water safe and there are many ways to cook dinner. I have my ways, they work for me in my locality, and I will share my insights with any who listen.

I hike with a lot of different people. Those friends of mine that come west have found they prefer different methods than what they use in the east. If I go east to hike with them, I will do just as they did with me. I will ask them which is best back there and change my ways to fit their paths. Hike your own hike (HYOH) is oft repeated in these forums and that is what makes this such a great place for discussion.

I make no bones about being opinionated but only about things in my corner of the world. That is because I have been studying this little corner for 60 plus years and have seen many things that were good elsewhere that were a big fail here. I have been tweeking my methods since I was a tad following my father and big brothers. Thanks to technology, my pack gets lighter as I get older. And the tweeking continues.

Thanks Y'all for putting up with me. And yes Jason, that "keyboard Warrior" thing is classic. Thanks for a good chuckle.

I love you man.

I love YOU, man.

This site is for sure different than backpacker.com. You can get your head bitten off over there. (Except that hardly anyone posts anymore)

Thanks to everyone on OB for being so reasonable and thoughtful.
Me, too. I once posted a thread about camping there and it barely got any responses considering the number of people who are registered.
