| When It Rains, It Pours! My husband's two nephews were recently involved in a serious car accident. The older nephew, 18 years old, was driving his pickup truck down a dirt road, lost control of the vehicle in a sharp curve, and totaled the truck. It flipped several times, ejected the 18 year old, who was not wearing his seat belt, before finally impaling a nearby street sign. The 18 year old was life-flighted to a hospital and the younger nephew was driven by ambulance. Luckily, neither boy suffered any permanent/life-altering injuries and both were discharged the same day.
Now, the oldest boy, as the owner/driver of the vehicle, has been issued two tickets. The first one is for speeding and the second one is for not wearing his seat belt.

| Well, that is what he gets for speeding and not wearing his seatbelt.
I hope he is smart enough to learn from his mistakes.
Lets see:
Impaled on a streetsign. (ouch!)
Brother in Hospital.
Car totaled.
Several hundred $$$ in traffic tickets.
There is a life lesson in there somewhere if he is wise enough to figure it out.
Glad he is gonna be okay!!

Hi...
Sorry to hear about such an incident.
Discharged the same day? Wow...!! And, I'll bet they were always cautioned about wearing their seatbelts...!!

| Well I'm praying for a fast recovery for the two of them. Remember it could be worse. here you hit a sign, telephone pole or anything government related, you get a ticket. In the late 90's a friend just nicked a telephone pole and it was a $250 fine, not to mention the other tickets he go.

| I'm grateful to hear he and his brother are alive and well to receive those tickets. As I read the beginning of your post, I was holding my breath, expecting to read about their traumatic brain injuries and comas. It's remarkable that they aren't seriously injured.

| I am glad that the boys are going to be okay, and hopefully the tickets will be a reminder to him about driving more carefully. I hope his mama tore him a new one about not wearing his seatbelt...I know I would have.

Coz | ^I agree with you, but I have one more thing to add:
Since the car was totaled, a local towing company had to come and pick it up. They charged him $125 to tow the vehicle plus $15/day to hold it. Since the car was totaled, they originally planned to scrap it for metal money. However, the towing company wanted another $125 to tow it to a junkyard. Well, they didn't even have the first $125 for the first tow, so they ended up having to sign over the title of the truck to the towing company. Ouch!

It's a simple thing really. Speed limits are posted and if you're in a residential area, don't go over thirty if you don't see the signs. I disagree with a few speed limits but generally they seem to be for safety sake; if not yours, then other's.
The seat belt law is the law whether you agree with it or not. It's not a bad idea. Just remember to carry a good knife with you in case it malfunctions.
Back to the speeding, anyone who tells me they have never broken the speed limit is either lying or doesn't drive. But there is a big difference between blasting down a country road and drag racing on a residential street.
I got a ticket once for doing 40 in a 30. I was wrong. But the cop noted on the ticket that it was a residential area. It was a half mile long stretch with cemetery on both sides. I paid the ticket but I remember thinking there were residents but I didn't think any of them would be complaining.
This particular case with love2hike's husband's nephew doesn't appear to have any grey areas. It's what is known as blatant. The only thing that could have made it any worse would be if they had hit someone else.
I'm happy they will both recover and I'm pretty sure they won't soon forget the experience.
