Default Wilderness First Responder Course

Anyone ever taken a course on this? I hear they tend to give you a lot of great information.

I have wanted to take one, but have never had the funds for it, and haven't found one in my area. I do keep my first aid and cpr up to date.

I'm sure any big-time mountaineer training schools have their own rescue courses. I have had the privilege to be in a "Special" unit in the military where our job was search and rescue. I got many years of experience from that but I am also an EMT and I try to keep up-to-date on that stuff. Speaking of that, I will have to re-cert here soon.

The parks system here here offers it, it is a week long course at a Boy Scout camp for 5 hundred and some dollars. So that refreshed my memory why I have never done it.

Wow that is something. I found one that was 80 hours long, but did not give a price. There was a first aid type class for wilderness, it was over a weekend, and only around $100. I cannot find it now.

I have had the basic first aid and cpr for years and I would think wilderness first aid would be about the same. You might have to be creative about some things, but from what I have heard that is what the coarse is about. I think I can do that on my own and save myself 500 bucks. Looks like a book would be the way to go if we find one.

Don't have any "real" first aid training. I wouldn't mind going to a class that teaches things like CPR, treating snake bites, and other real life stuff. I get worried now with the kid coming along. They are much more curious then anything else.

Raising kids has changed we used to keep ipecac syrup and activated carbon on hand for the kids. I guess they don't do that anymore according to my class. I haven't called poison control yet to confirm it yet.

GPER,

When I went through the EMT-B course a few years ago we used Activated Charcoal. In Virginia at least, they no longer carry Syrup of Ipecac in the medic vehicles.

Thanks, I'll have to get some of that since we have grandkids now.
