| Worse day! Today we had to put our dog down! She was a part of our family and its so odd already without her. I don't think I've cried so much in a long time. It's hard to be strong for your kids when your heart is breaking! She went on all hikes with us, she was my protection when I was home alone. I loved her and will miss her dearly.

| I've had to do that several times, and it never gets any easier! I always took them to the vet's and held them in my arms while the vet gave them the injection. It was the last thing I could do for our most loyal of friends. And yeah I cried like a baby- big tough firefighter than I am LOL.
It's hard to get past, but you just have to treasure their memories and know that you did what was best for them. Eventually, you will be ready for another dog. I can barely imagine my life with out one or two dogs around.
My condolences to you and your family.

| Oh, man, so sorry to read this. My dog is on the verge and I've just been a basket case for the last two weeks - every other day is a good one and the opposite days I think I'm going to have to make that decision. Part of me hopes he will go in his sleep so I don't have to choose for him.
Hugs to you

| So sorry Campclose. I feel your sorrow. Tank will soon be 11 and I dread the day I have to make that decision.

| So sorry for your loss. Take comfort in knowing that you provided that wonderful animal a loving and secure home for many years. I put our dog down 14 months ago. She was with us for just over 15 years old. I too cried, even though we have two additional dogs to replace the emptiness in our house, not a day goes by that I don't think of her. I often see traits and mannerisms of her in our other two dogs. This helps ease the loss of such a loyal and good friend.

| Its a terrible thing to have to do (to choose that is). I wished every night for 2 weeks that she would pass in her sleep. She too would have good moments and then bad moments. The bad outweighed the good. I know in my heart it was the right decision.
WVbream- I can't imagine having to do this ever again. It breaks my heart to read that you had to do it more than once.
Thank you all for your kind words! I don't know if we will ever get another dog.

| I am so sorry for your loss. You made the right decision for her and it's clear that you gave her a wonderful life. I know exactly what you mean when you say you don't know about having another one. That's how I feel. My animal companion of almost 16 years means the world to me. When the time comes, I'll probably go back to volunteering with animal groups as a way to honor her.

Looked her in the eyes the whole time and rubbed her ears the ways she liked. She seemed so calm and relaxed. As if she knew this was the right thing.

| Oldsarge - that is sweet and I am sure she felt your love. I was in the room but I can't say that I did not cry. I don't know if I helped her or not (crying). She was always so concerned when someone was hurt or upset, she just knew. I tried to be strong for her. Now she can take hikes anytime she wishes, thats what I tell the kids.
