Default Colorado July, 2011

Here are some pictures of my latest treks in Colorado back in July, but sadly I wasn't able to take my Nikon to Rocky Mountain National park. Keep in mind this is the first backcountry camping trip for all of us.

Back country camping at Rocky Mountain National Park with my daughter and my cousin. We camped out at the Rabbit Ears campsite, which was less than 2 miles from the trailhead. I didn't want to push them too far on their first camping trip. I took a wrong turn down the Gem Lake trail and added 2 extra miles to our hike. Thank God for a compass and topo map to let me know that I had went the wrong way with night closing in. Before we got lost, I asked my daughter to hold the bear spray while I looked at the map. All of a sudden I hear a "ssssssspppp" sound, and see a red cloud..... I asked her why the fuck did she spray the bear spray, and before she could answer, the cloud had turned on us and had us coughing and gagging. My eye burned for like 15 minutes, and the newly acquired drinking water had to be used to wash out our eyes.... Turns out she got spooked by some bugs... WTF!?

Made a wrong turn here...

We got camp setup JUST before nightfall (due to delays with the bear spray, and the wrong turn mentioned above...):

Put out our bear canister at night...

It was untouched the next morning!

Sunrise at camp

About how far away the bear canister was...

Why they called the campsite Rabbit Ears:

Glad you had a great trip. You know, you don't really need bear spray at RMNP, but you do need the bear bag.

We used a bear canister to store our food and any possibly scented items.

That last picture is just gorgeous. I have lived in Colorado before for over four years, but have never camped there. Guess I missed out!

Next time try a trip in CO away from RMNP and you will not have to deal with all those people, cars, permits and regulations. Any National Forest will do.
