Default Food from a can

Whenever I go camping for only a few days I usually pack a few cans. They are cheap and don't need a lot of special care (like using a frigo bag to keep them fresh).

My car is rather small and packing a lot of food for only a few days would mean an uncomfortable ride.

What do you take with you on a camping trip that only lasts 2-3 days ?

Jerky, fishing hooks, and several bags of dehydrated goodness. I also generally have oranges, because I use them in place of a level when making camp.

I take homemade beef jerky, packs of coconut cream, a fruit and nut mix, fruit, a jar of fermented vegetables, cured meat like salami and cheese like parmigiano-reggiano. All this food will last days with out refrigeration.

Food similar to being at home.
Cans are not a new idea. Its what we backpacked with in the old days.

Yeah- most times I just pick out things I like and throw the perishables in the cooler. I have an electric cooler that I use when I have a power connection. It will get stuff down to around 45F, so it won't keep stuff like milk too long.

Mostly I just use a good cooler. One thing I found out- a lot of coolers have good insulation on the bottom and sides, and none on top. I've taken high-exansion foam and filled the tops of all my coolers with it. It adds several hours of life to the ice.

It doesn't matter what we bring on a camping trip. ANYTHING only lasts a few days. We have some big major food hounds in my family. So, no need to worry about a shelf life in my crew.

We may take a couple of cans of ready to eat soups or baked beans, and a few of those ready to eat Hormel Completes when we go. I always have some dehydrated food as well and that doesn't take up much room.

Non backpacking trip? A sack of spuds, bacon, eggs, more spuds, steak/hamburger, onions, peppers, coldcuts, and an assortment of dutch ovens. Grandma bakes bread in the dutch ovens for coldcut sandwiches, which follows the hearty breakfast and sets the stage for a big supper. Which explains why I am trying to lose 20-30 lbs.
