Default Steak takes so long over the campfire

Seriously we through some Porterhouse steaks over our campfire (open slotted camp grate) and they took forever to cook. The kids were going crazy! I really thought that they would be quicker but I swear it was about an hour before there was no blood coming out.

Hi...

Regarding steaks, they should be cooked fairly quickly over a high heat. Do you put them very close to the HOT coals, or suspend them too far from the coals (and flames)?

I carry a small charcoal grill camping because of the same problem.

To answer your question, buy a tin foil pan that's 10 by 20 inches in the super market. Punch 6 or 8 pencil sized holes in the bottom of the pan and place it upside down over the steaks. It will hold in the heat like a regular grill lid and cut cooking time to 20 minutes for a medium steak.

Add heat or reduce the distance to the fire.

Heat, more heat! We put steaks over HOT coals, just a couple of inches higher than the coals. Four minutes per side for the medium-rare doneness we like. About seven minutes per side would give you well done.
