I prefer foam pad than airbed for a fall camping trip. I chose foam pad because it is warmer and more comfortable to sleep on while airbed is bouncy, no heat regulator unlike foam pad.

We use airbeds mostly, but we also purchased a mini pump to blow them up so they are pretty plump and comfy. We rarely trek in all the way with our gear, so I can't speak to ease of use.

An airbed is far more comfortable because you have a cushion of air between you and the ground which prevents the cold from the earth seeping up into your sleeping bag and you. There's nothing more bone chilling than having no barrier between you and the ground. A foam mattress is okay for comfort and ideally both would be nice but that doesn't stop the chill as effectively as being raised off the ground entirely by a cushion of air. Save using just the foam mattress for summer camping alone.
