You get what you pay for is a good general rule, but far from a concrete one. Often a far cheaper item may be the better alternative.
When buying anything over about $50, I check to see what Consumer Reports says. I take their ratings with a grain of salt though. Then I go to a place like Amazon.com and read the ratings of real people using the item in real world situations. I take those with a grain of salt too, but I can get a good sense of whether the item is one I should buy, or if I should consider another make/model.
