I had a set of throwing knives when I was a teen. There were three of them, about six inches long, the kind of thing you buy out of a martial arts magazine. They were fun, but I never could stick them into anything with any consistency. A friend had throwing stars, now those were a blast... But not a very good weapon.

Played around with those too, you could really tick someone off with one of those.

I can't do knives, but I have done tomahawks with success. It is fun like shooting air soft guns or throwing darts, or plinking.

Throwing knives are fun, but they're basically completely impractical. The range is crap, they're hard to aim well, it's hard to get them to stick in terribly well except under good conditions. It takes forever to learn them well enough to overcome their inherent restrictions.

Throwing knives is like juggling. It's cool at parties, and it's pretty fun, but it's just playing. Playing has its place, of course. Sometimes that's even in the woods.

That was sort of their purpose, more of a distraction technique than serious injury. Gave you time to run up with a sword and impale them. In our state prison, prisoners used to make them and hide them in the dirt with some poo on them. Easy to grab quickly and throw. They would give some nasty infections...

My nephew is apes over knives and has quite the collection. He's only 13, but he's pretty knowledgeable about knives and is learning how to use them. I've not heard him talk of throwing them, but I'll bet he enjoys that, too. He does live in the country.

Well, I am a proud member of the merchant marine and we don't throw knives for fun. We throw rope. Lots of mony changed hands in rope throwing contests and line handling skills. As a young guy on the deck I was hard to beat. Now that I'm old and kinda decrepit I mostly watch and offer advice and make a few side wagers.
