With a smartphone who needs a laptop anymore. I am a geek too but I never take the laptop camping. We go camping together away from it all. We even leave the phones in the car.

I'm a geek first, and a camper second. Come to think of it, I'm pretty much a home body, too. Not all of us fit into nice little slots. Some of the things I am, my family doesn't even realize. So like they say -- it's different strokes for different folks.

I take my phone, but it's off. I save the battery for the nightly "I love you I'm alive" wife text. I have my GPS of course. I like to download my track and i have Geocaches along my route programmed into it.
I do love the planning though... I'll plan a LOT. I've got three trips planned now that I may take over the next year.

Read my blog with its now correct address:

Problem with stereotypes is that they're rarely applicable. I'm a nerd. Not just a guy with a smartphone but a nerd. Video games, Dungeons and Dragons, comic books, millions of apps, Renaissance Festival, etc.

How do I camp? I walk off into the woods toting a 17lb. pack and get myself lost for a few days. The phone is off, the weather is unknown until it happens, and I don't give a damn what's going on in the world if I can't see/hear/smell it.

I'm a nerd but I let go of the entire world when I hit the trail and I sleep the sleep of the dead when the sun drops. And I know plenty of nerds who let go more than your average "outdoorsmen". My girlfriend is one of them.

I'm a computer nerd by profession and the only electronic device I bring with me is my smart phone. Then again, the way phones are nowadays, may as well bring a computer. Oh, well.

I take the phone but like Theosus, it is shut off. It is emergency equipment.
