Default Bug Out Motorhome

I've been wanting to find a cheap Class C motorhome on Craigslist and fix it up as my bug out vehicle. I'm going to stock it up with everything I need for that, but I'm sure I'll use it as a camper too for the family. So far I'm looking into solar power options, flex-fuel, a small greenhouse garden on the back, etc.

What thoughts would you have on something like this?

This whole bug out thing seems absurd to me. If the world falls apart, how are going to get fuel to go anywhere in that thing.? Maybe you need a string of bug out mules. You would never run out of fuel and could get away from people.

I think that is why he is looking for alternative energy such as solar power and what not. He could be like my brother who bought some land in the middle of nowhere. He bought an old broken down motor home and had it moved to the plot. That is his bug out spot, and I think it is cool.

I am not sure I follow it either myself, but it has been a very long day too. What exactly are you aiming for here and what is "bug out"?

Hi...

"Bug out" is a phrase meaning "let's get outa here"..."lets get outa town" (preferably now), "beat it", etc.

A Bug Out Bag is also referred to as a BOB, and is a sling/backpack, etc. containing emergency essentials.

"Pathfinder", who is now posting on this forum, is NOT Pathfinder1, which is me...!!

In a TEOTWAWKI situation I am guessing roads would be 100 clogged with abandoned refugee cars.
Motorhomes don't do well off road.
They are also large targets not easily concealed and offer no protection from inbound bullets.
How about a Jeep, Unimog, 18 wheeler or even a farm tractor with small cargo trailer?
My next question is where will you go that will not be swamped by starving refugees?
How about just pulling the curtains closed and set it out at home?

I just got home from a two week car trip. With the right knowledge, those Bayou boys live right well down in Louisiana but I don't have that knowledge. I'd probably get ate by a gator or shredded by the sawgrass the first day. New Mexico and West Texas look like dust bowls to me but those people are quite happy where they are at and could survive as well. Bottom line, I can do just fine right where I am, but I bet most of you wouldn't have the local knowledge to fare as well. So where are you going to bug out to? Can you survive long term there? Or will there be locals resisting your invasion and hoards of other refugees?

Rather than a bug out, (unless you have a specific location where you will be welcomed) the best advice is to stay put, convince your neighbors of the need for a plan, and put that plan into practice.

This is the first "bug out" thread I've ever read on multiple forums where posters actually responded with thought and not knee jerk responses.

Well done!

Our lil 18 ft ultra lite camper is a bug out campers first cousin. It is a hurricane evacuation vehicle. Stocked with all the survival stuff and with a strong box for important papers and several dvds of home movies of our homes contents. We are not materialistic folks but do have a few treasured items that fit in a box under the bunk. Peg picks at me cause my treasured items also serve as survival items they are stuff like great grandpas rifle grandpas ole knives, my dads fly rod and felet knife etc.Starting next month it will sit ready to pull out at a moments notice. We just went to town to restock after a weekend trip. We figure we have short term groceries and long term suplies that would alow us to survive for a long time. When Katrina hit we were away from home for 3 weeks and had a great vacation. When folks saw our licence plates and asked if we were huricane evacuees we said no, we are hurricane campers

I like Cappy's reply. Bugging out doesn't necessarily mean pre-or-post apocalyptic. Sometimes it can mean outrunning a localized natural disaster.
