A lot of people have added overdrives to accomodate higher speeds on the road. Warn makes many retrofit units that bolt right on to the trans and are operated like Cappy explained. My Dad had a 1950 Willys pick-up that came with 4.88:1 gears. It needed overdrive to get it under 3000 rpms on the highway.

Yo Coz! Wonderin' how da ole truck is doin today? I know all yall prolly know this but when ya put on an oil filter ya dip ya finger in the oil and coat the rubber gasket with motor oil then put it on hand tight only, and if ya big and burly don't bug ya eyes out tightnin' it neither. It don't take much. I have a big ridgid strap style filter wrench with like a inch wide strap. Been havin it for years and the neighborhood knows it. Needless to say every once and a while someone needs to borrow it. I usually don't charge but a beer or 2 for my services, but I seen some doosys. Last time was a neighbor just bought an ole 4wd jacked up farm truck painted John deer green The good thing was it was jacked up enough for my chubby ole self to get rough with it. By the time I got it broke loose it looked like it had been wrung out. Hope ya have better luck than that. Please keep us posted I love hearing bout a man and his toys

Prior to overdrive out of the tranny, they had 2 speed rear ends in trucks. I learned on a '47 ford pug nose. It had the old flathead 80 hp motor with a 4 speed and a vacuum operated 2 speed rear end. We also had a '50 chev 2 ton that had a vacuum 2 speed rear end. There was also an aftermarket secondary transmission called a Brownie that gave one of those old trucks a full range of secondary gears in the primary transmission. It had two sticks and was an artform to double shift a clean mesh. Neighbor had one and I only drove it once but had to play with those twin sticks.

Good luck with that filter Coz. My experience, the over tightness of an oil filter is directly proportional to the difficulty to get a hand on it.

Well we got'er off after church service with a bit of fussin' and some limited cussin'!
I don't know what idiot did that but I hope that is not a sign of things to come.
Pulled the genny off and the bracket was put on by my 12 year old neice it looks like. What part of "it's gotta be strait" was hard to understand? Got that fixed but found a bolt broke in the block so gotta run to my Dads business to ease that out and get that last bolt in place.
Center horn button is missing but got a aftermarket installed and working for the state inspection. Installing a Klaxon (OOGAH!!) horn is a moral inperative for this truck I think.
The only thing I gotta finish under the hood is the hood latch. I thought it was just bent but looks like some parts and spring are missing so next Saturday I get to go parts digging at the junk yards. Allways fun!!
I still have not greased the thing, need to re-route the speedometer and overdrive cable, do a brake job and it should be road worthy.
I will keep y'all posted.
Coz

I wonder how I missed this? It is the same year a friend of mine just picked up about a month back, he is going blue & white on his but wow that burgundy is a great shade. Cute pup too!
