Default Pop Up Buyers Guide??

I'm considering buying an used pop up camper. Something middle of the road in price. Can't afford brand new, but not too far off. I'd rather buy slightly used anyway, and let someone else take the hit on depreciation.

Other than having looked at them at RV shows for the past few years, I really don't know a great deal about them. If anyone could fill me in on what to look out for, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Check the floor, check all systems for proper operation. Look for tears in fabric. Spend your time getting familiar with the systems and crawl around a few at various dealers.
You will learn all you need to know in a short time by cruising forums and reading articles.

Now's the time to start checking out the RV lots anyway, so grab some coffee and go hit one or two on the weekend.

Here's a great resource.

Good advice from Lorax. I have had a crank and cable operated unit which is a crummy design. I would love to try a hydraulic one. Bigger is not necessarily better unless you have a bunch of kids. Having a full head is a plus but not required. Look for good canvas with no rot or rips. Make sure you set up a used one before putting an offer on it.

Don't drive faster than your trailer tires are rated for usually 65 mph, grease wheel bearings and don't count on camping in one much below freezing. I love how you can open them up and see everything from the comfort of bed. Carry a spare tire.

Thanks for the good advise guys.

I've heard to really check the bed areas, someone told that when they leak, the wood of the bed is usually what gets wet and rots.

Basically, I'm looking for something of average size, I don't really need a big one. It's just my wife and myself right now. Want something with an A/C on it, most likely an outdoor kitchen, and good seating areas inside and out.

I've had years of experience pulling an ATV around on an utility trailer, so I understand the importance of keeping the bearings greased, as well as a spare tire. A lot of people I know keep an extra wheel bearing with them too, but I can't actually see the purpose in that if I keep good maintenance up.

I will of course want to see everything set up, and actually see everything work, especially with a model with an AC, I'd want to see it run and let it run long enough to get cold.

You might find this article useful: How to buy an RV - CampingRoadTrip.com. It's got a pretty comprehensive list of the things to check before you go and negotiate the price for the popup you're planning to get.

Good luck!
