I've actually been considering of getting a popup myself. Not that I don't enjoy camping with a tent. But from the way I look at it, it's also going to give me the comfort camping during the cooler months. Not to mention that my back's been giving me more of a hard time now when I sleep on the ground.

We started out much the same as you, except we went from a tent to a van that we converted. Mind you I love my fifth wheel today, but we were sure able to get into some fantastic camp sites with our little van.

I don't know what "roughing it" means. I've backpacked, bicycle camped, and horseback camped. I even trailer camped once when I was a kid. I also used to like "tailgate camping". This involves the use of a capped pickup truck I have that is the third one now and is equipped with a wood burning stove that is welded to the bed just behind the right rear wheel housing. The stovepipe is detachable and runs right through the side of the cap.

All of these seem to be a breeze and not rough at all.

Rouging it is different to different folks. My set up is a 8 x10 tarp, sleeping bag, and an inflatable sleeping mat. All goes into my backpack and I don't consider that roughing it.

Everyone should start out in a tent so that they can appreciate better ways to camp later. A tent trailer is the next step and it seems like heaven after camping in a tent. You are off the ground, which is a big plus in more ways than one. You still get to be in nature, but it is much more enjoyable. You can still build a fire, hike and enjoy nature. I feel more secure in our tent trailer, or pop-up as some of you call it.

Sounds like you loved it. I'd prefer a trailer over a tent for camping any day. My mother and step-father have a little land with a trailer on it. They were proud of their outhouse that they built. I didn't understand, but they loved their crappy creation.

Okay, my definition of roughing it is "curling up in a poncho in a snow drift after drinking an an empty popcan refilled with melted snow and pine needles and having a good nights sleep." Semi-roughing it means "having a sleeping bag and shelter half as a reflector for the campfire in a snowdrift."

Anything after that is luxury camping, from a tent to a class A motor home, as long as your only worry is "do we have enough toilet paper".

Y'all can call any of it anything you want. I consider my thermarest or BA Insulated Air Core luxury but not having them is not going to keep me from going out in the woods for long walks or nights out.
