I thought the tires were in good shape and we didn't pick up a nail. It seemed like it was the sidewall that gave out. We didn't use our trailer a lot so I'm sure this had something to do with the blowout.

Yeah, a sidewall failure is a catastrophe, especially in inclement weather. There's nothing for it but replacement. Most trailers are kept outdoors and the sun beats the hell out of the tires. An earlier post suggested covering them (good idea).

I've built two trailers in my life. They both utilized auto tires. One has 14 inch tires and the other 15's. I put used tires on them. The latter one has been in use for 27 years and still has the original tires on it. Trailer tires just don't measure up.

Hi...

Had a tire fail on an old Teardrop-shaped trailer while I was towing it on the Washington, DC Beltway early one dark ayem. The trailer was fairly heavily laden.

A DOT pickup truck saw this and stopped, shining its headlights on the scene while I was changing the tire. I was very glad to have the additional accompanyment.

PS... I strongly dislike driving on the Beltway...!!
