Default Best part of U.S. for survival

We just watched the movie, "Deep Impact," in which a meteor strikes Earth and part of the U.S. populations goes into a mountain survival bunker to live for two years, or until it's safe to come out and repopulate the U.S. If you had to choose anywhere in the U.S. to guarantee your survival after two years, where would you choose? I'm thinking the mountains are a good place, but I'm not so sure.

Depending on the scenario, I'd prefer the semi tropical areas. Unless of course a meteor strikes, then I'd prefer to be up in the mountains like in the movie. Don't need to be near sea level on a meteor strike. Once that tsunami hits, it going to be like nature panning for gold along those coast lines!

Efficiency: When in doubt, empty your magazine!

Western Colorado (front range west), Wyoming, Western Montana, Idaho, Utah, and the high parts of neighboring states.
1. If the global shift people are right and the north pole moves over the top of Britain, this is the western pivot point of the globe that will stay the same and suffer the least.
2. If the Sunami/Plate shift/ general flooding folks are right (Gordon Michael Scallion et al) This region will become the ocean front property. Everybody else will need life jackets.
3. IN the event of an incoming astral body, unless a direct hit, the mountains will break the worst part of the massive wind overpressures.
4. In the event of a nuclear maelstrom, again the mountains and jet stream will push the worst of the fall out over the top of this area.
5. This area is the largest aquafir in the country making fresh spring water the most available. Ma nature has a way of cleansing herself if given a chance.
6. This area is the least populated, meaning if the aliens attack, this will be the last place they try to subdue. (watch the movies, they always hit Los Angeles, NY and DC first.)
7. In the event of an EMP, from whatever source, we still have out houses and bear fat for making candles.
8. We are high enough to get lots of ice for food preservation, even through the summer. (homemade ice cream in August? who'd a thunk it?)
9. For evidence, check who has residences in McCall and Ketchum Id, Stevensville and Red Lodge Mt, Jackson Hole Wy, Aspen and Vail Co, Park City and Sundance Ut. All those politicians and movie stars know ......

A lot of places have these advantages to some degree but the upper rockies has the most advantage.

Wow! These are some thoughtful responses. You've gotten me to thinking. Here I am within 200 miles of the Atlantic Ocean on land as flat as the proverbial pancake. You're right about Nature's cleansing itself, Grandpa. Remember that Exxon Valdese oil spill in 1989? They thought it would be the end of many things. Nature got busy and started cleaning herself up.

I absolutely agree with Grandpa, so much so that once hubby finishes school in a year we are going to look out that way for jobs and property. I hate to leave all of the family we have here since they are our only support system, but we think that is what is best for our family.

I have been thinking about this one for a week. Grandpa's post is compelling but that country has too much winter. Maybe the country around Grand Junction or sw Utah. Maybe eastern Washingtion near the Coumbia River.

It is possible that the unemotional practical answer is somewhere like no Florida or so Georgia. Lots of water, easy winters and a lot to eat. It would be hard to avoid the density of other people.

One thing to think about is the kinds of animals you want to have to deal with. They'll all head to where the living conditions are best. I do not want to be anywhere near alligators or crocodiles. Who has the biggest mosquitoes?

For a meteor strike, I'm guessing the side that doesn't get hit.

Nobody really knows what would happen if the earth flipped on it's axis so you may just as well flip a coin.

For those who think the mountains would be a good place, the problem is, a lot of people thing this, and people would be streaming into the mountains from the cities. Food is scarce in the mountains, especially green vegetables.

If I were going to pick a spot, it would be in some third-world country near the equator. This would be:

a) away from most areas targeted in a nuclear war (and associated fallout)
b) least impacted by a nuclear winter or "year without summer" type scenario from a moderate meteor strike or large volcano"
c) near populations of indigenous people who could continue to raise crops with minimal outside resources such as fuel.

Anywhere but Texas, y'all stay where y'all are at.
