Default Best shelter

We all know that we need three things to survive, food, water and shelter, to survive. What's the best kind of shelter to build in a survival situation?

Look for a rock out cropping, Nice thick Hemlock, Fir, Spruce you can cut you a small entrance way and improvise a shelter. Have a tarp in your day pack, pick up a Boy Scouts hand book as they have some pretty good survival shelter ideas.

A fallen tree can make a good emergency shelter as well. Often the root ball pulls out and leaves a depression that stays relatively dry and often fills with leaves, which are good insulation. The rootball and hole gets you out of the wind and may also keep off rain.

A fallen tree can also be the basis for a shelter made from brush by leaning branches and whatever other things are available on either side of the fallen trunk, in lean-to fashion.

Obviously neither of these is as good as a rock outcrop or better yet a cave, but rock outcrops and caves can be scarce.

It's a good idea to think about what shelters you could find/make in the area you plan to be in. You can then add things to your survival gear to maximize those types of shelters.
