Two clans coming here and the other daughter and family is going to Colorado to be with our son/brother. Her son is also there.

We are going to have a woodchucking good time here. Neighbor just brought his log splitter for me to use and I have 5 cords of good wood to be split and stacked. I don't mind feeding them but they gonna have to earn it

We will also have our annual Christmas tree excursion to the canyons.

These producers and writers always want to put a spin on these shows and make them something they are not. If it was me i would tell them you either let me tell the truth or hit the road.

Nothing wrong with being prepared for anything. People are even making Bug Out Vehicles and campers that gives you greater ability and peace of mind to evacuate or respond to almost any emergency. I live in South Florida and just like Newanderthal i stay prepped hurricanes and emergencies. I also have my camping gear prepped so all i have to do is load it in the car.

These shows should not poke fun at these people who prep but should at least encourage those watching to prep food and the basics to get through a storm for a few weeks. Shame on them!

We stay prepared and could last about a month before we would have to do some soul-searching about long-term survival. By then we'd be figuring a way to lay in some crops. We do plant a few things each year and could easily raise chickens and even pigs if we had to. It's all the vagrants wanting handouts that would do us in.

EMP? According to this, we now have the capacity to shut everything down.

It's not out of the realm of imagination to see the end of civilization. I really think people are just too complacent about all of the systems that are in place which rely on technology or public systems. I know I have seen a decline of people knowing basic skills. What I was taught about kitchen skills are no longer taught. It's scary to know the majority of people now don't know how to prepare food such as a live chicken, for a meal. I was talking to the women in my homemakers group last week and all of us knew personally of people who have no idea how to cook from scratch. One of the women even knew someone who didn't know that bacon was from a pig. It's mind boggling to say the least.

Not all of us live in areas where we can grab a chicken in the backyard and wring its neck or shoot a squirrel out of the kitchen window, but we do our best. Thank goodness for the food network and PBS cooking shows. It is sad that there are so many mothers and fathers that are too busy working and providing for their families that they have run out of time and energy to pass on basic survival skills beyond fast food and takeout.

My nephew takes his hard earned after school job money and runs to McDonalds to get breakfast for my sister's family on Sunday. She tries to teach him how to cook, but he isn't happy unless he drives his car for the instant gratification. Her husband thinks cooking is his wife's job.

I agree that isnt out of the realm to see the end of civiliation. The only idea that I criticize is those that think it will happen all of the sudden on one day, like December 21st.

If the Mayans were so smart, they would still be around

I think the Mayans just ran out of stone tablets and no one could get to the store to buy more. Seriously though, I've taught my kids what to do and how to do. My daughter can wring a chicken's neck, dress it and cook it from beginning and end. She is a great wild cook and can do the same if she's in a kitchen or at the campfire. I really worry that people don't know basic skills. It's the same with every generation though, and I guess we all survived so I guess we learned the hard way.

So true, hummingbird! It's the lack of these basic skills that's what makes the idea so scary for a lot of people. Like what many of these shows are saying: it's not a matter of if it will happen. It's when it will happen.
