Most of these traps are early warning devices, meant to slow down and stop intruders and allow the growers time to leave the area. I've known some traps to be explosive types, like an M80, something loud but not going to maim or kill anyone. You are right about most people not knowing what a pot plant looks like.

Seems to me a couple of tied up dogs would work a whole lot better than a trap that is most likely to be tripped when you are absent. Nothing is better early warning in the forest than a couple of dogs.

You would think so, but I'm just stating what the norm is for these guys. Maybe the hassle of feeding and maintaining the animals is troublesome. Besides, how would you know if the dogs are barking at people or just another animal. Geese are good for early warning too!

I don't think they could know if an M80 was triggered by a person or a deer, either. Not much of a hassle to feed the dogs, I think. I'm not saying leave them there all the time. Only when they're on site.

Again, don't really know why, just commenting on what I was taught.

I am trying to remember the name of it, but we actually saw an interesting documentary about this not too long ago on Netflix. Most of those guys operations had someone on site all of the time to keep an eye on things.

If it's that much, yeah they usually have someone there. You wouldn't believe the number of plants we've caught site of lately. If you don't walk your land regularly, you may have some surprises in store. A neighbor of mine found a dozen almost fully mature plants on hi property. So he went ahead and disposed of them without calling the local authorities. However, let me make this clear, he knew this was a bunch of kids from the neighborhood and not some big operators. Some have been killed for less.
