Default Knots

The recent posting of the new article on fishing knots inspire me to post this link. I though I had posted it once before, but I couldn't find it when I did a search.

Hi...

Since most of use knots when camping, I thought that was super interesting...thanks. I bookmarked it, too.

I've used this site many times for learning and trying out new knots. But I almost always return to simplest knots and use them for everything.

I like knots, but there's only five I really use. My hammock "lashing" (its not really a knot - but it holds tight and comes loose after a night of holding me in a tree), the taught line hitch (the boss for tent fly lines), the clove hitch (bear bagging), the butterfly knot (for loops in the middle of a line) and a fish hook knot (sort of a modified noose. Learned from the back of a pack of walmart fishing lures years ago. Great for knots in the end of cords).

Sure, you can get really fancy, but those five serve me very well, and are pretty simple.

I have to admit that I'm pretty much all thumbs when it comes to tying knots. I can do a slip knot, a square knot and a regular knot (not sure if it has a name) but other than that, I just end up making a mess.

The animated knot line site is great. I found it a while back and have shared it with the rope impared.
Always thought it strange nobody ever mentions a bowline knot. I use it all the time.

Bowline is the first knot I teach the cub scouts after the square knot. The more adept learn it one handed in case one hand or arm is injured.

For my bear bag, I use a simple overhand slip knot on the bag and a clove hitch to hold the bag in the air. With the newer high tensile cordage like paracord, I have found the tautline to be worthless when pitching a tent, It just doesn't hold the small cord like it did the 3/8 and larger rope we used to use. I carry a couple of spare tightener clips which work real well with the small cordage.

It holds fine with the 3mm Kelty Triptease but I find The Adjustable Grip Hitch holds a bit better on that and the 4mm Bluewater I use for various guylines on tents and tarps.
