| as mentioned earlier, learn the basics about which animals are poisonous and try to avoid them.
A tip for snakes, don't ever put your hand or foot anywhere that you can't see (under or inside of things). When crossing a log, step on the log, then off the other side. If you just step over it, you might put your foot down right in front of a snake's head and he'll bite out of reflex.
A little thought goes a long way.
That said, the woods aren't that dangerous. You're more likely to be killed by a coke machine than a snake and more likely to be killed by another human being inside city limits than by any animal anywhere.
Use your head, keep your eyes AND EARS (take out those ear buds) open and avoid any animal you can't positively identify as being harmless. Don't put yourself in a risky situation and don't do anything that seems like a bad idea and your worst experience will be forgetting the rain fly at home or getting blisters.
