Default Map reading courses?

Does anyone know of a place to take a map reading or compass reading course? I have looked all over. I am the first to admit I suck at reading both a map and a compass.

Here are a few sites to give you basic info. I suggest finding an area that you know and are familiar with to train in. This way if you get lost you will not become overwhelmed. Basic navigation isn't hard, it's all about confidence in your abilities. Once you start doubting yourself or your equipment, you will really end up in trouble. Same thing with using a GPS. I learn in a large field how to operate the device and plot course, use back track features and so on. The other issue would then becoming proficient with reading the map and associating it with the lay of the land (terrain association). To bad you don't live near by, I'd be willing to help out.

Thanks for that. I wish I lived closer, it would be fun to trek with some of your folks. You all seem very knowledgeable on these subjects.

You really want to pick up a copy of this book:

"Wilderness Navigation: Finding Your Way Using Map, Compass, Altimeter, & Gps"

Amazon.com: Wilderness Navigation: Finding Your Way Using Map, Compass, Altimeter, & Gps (9780898866292): Bob Burns, Mike Burns, Paul Hughes: Books

Used copies start at $0.07.

Wow, that looks like a fantastic book. Would I want both editions or just the one? Would there be a big difference between them?

I don't own the 2nd edition. I'm halfway through the 1st edition and it's great. The 2nd edition is probably just a further edited copy of the 1st edition and might cover any changes in GPS gear. Compasses haven't changed any so either edition is likely fine. Most maps you'd use were likely done before either of those editions so either is quite fine to get. Guess it depends on if you want the 1999 copy for $0.07 or the 2004 copy for $9.

Don't know if there's a Borders Books near you. But they are closing down and I have been getting 30-50% off on all books, this will get even better as time goes on! Picked up several books, compass & map reading, GPS, and Survival. As far as the book you are speaking of, I'd go with the second edition. I agree, it's most likely more up to date on any GPS changes and will cover more on it usages. Sounds like a good buy!
