| Hello & welcome to OBC JennaSim! There are several threads that cover different ideas about survival gear. http://www.outdoorbasecamp.com/forum...t-review-3029/
It all depends on what you will be doing. If it's a short hike not far from help, your kit will differ than if your going way out in the wilderness for a multi day event. Also, if you are going out in a group you may be looking towards a fully equipped First aid kit.
There are two books I recommend, 1st, Cody Lundin's, 98.6 degrees The art of keeping your ass alive, 2nd John D. McCann's, Build the perfect survival kit. These books are geared towards the day hiker who may encounter events that will thrust them into a survival situation. You will notice that most of these kits are custom made and built one what the owner feels fit's his needs. You can buy a pre-made survival kit, then tailor it to suit your needs.
There are many other survival books out that that have a ton of info in it, more than you may ever need. The most important issue of all about having a kit is properly knowing how to use it. I highly recommend looking into those books, especially the one by Cody Lundin. It's very informative about not only the survival kit, but science and reasoning behind the survival strategy.
