Default Most Important Items to bring and when to purchase them?

I need some help guys. I need a complete set of survival gear items for our hiking next month. I dont have any ideas where to buy a set of those things. DO you have any suggestions? On-line stores will surely help me.

Thanks
JS

Hello & welcome to OBC JennaSim! There are several threads that cover different ideas about survival gear.

http://www.outdoorbasecamp.com/forum...t-review-3029/

It all depends on what you will be doing. If it's a short hike not far from help, your kit will differ than if your going way out in the wilderness for a multi day event. Also, if you are going out in a group you may be looking towards a fully equipped First aid kit.

There are two books I recommend, 1st, Cody Lundin's, 98.6 degrees The art of keeping your ass alive, 2nd John D. McCann's, Build the perfect survival kit. These books are geared towards the day hiker who may encounter events that will thrust them into a survival situation. You will notice that most of these kits are custom made and built one what the owner feels fit's his needs. You can buy a pre-made survival kit, then tailor it to suit your needs.

There are many other survival books out that that have a ton of info in it, more than you may ever need. The most important issue of all about having a kit is properly knowing how to use it. I highly recommend looking into those books, especially the one by Cody Lundin. It's very informative about not only the survival kit, but science and reasoning behind the survival strategy.

Hi Jenna, welcome to OBC. Lot's of good suggestions above for the what. As to the where, since you are in Ogden, Recreational Outlet on Washington, Sportsmans Warehouse on Riverdale, or Smith and Edwards up north of town are all good places to get what you need. I'm a big fan of Smith and Edwards myself. (they even have a snack bar with real ice cream.)

Where are you going hiking? I know your area well and may have suggestions if you are interested.

Is this day hiking, in which case you really need the five essentials "just in case"?

Backpacking, in which you want to be relatively comfortable?

or "survival practice" in which case you're going to be literally surviving with a minimum of equipment?

Hi...

I thought it was six. Or was it sixteen? What were we talking about again?

Hi...

Welcome aboard. You look fine today.

Grandpa and oldsarge have some good advice.

I don't get my gear from the big box/big price stores. I'm mostly a Military surplus guy. Primarily from The Sportsman's Guide. Been using that stuff since I was a little Pathfinder1.

On the chance you can find a joint that RENTS gear, that might be another starting point.

Do you have everything else BUT the survival gear? Do you plan to write about it?

The best of luck in your endeavor.

Jenna,
Don't go out a buy a bunch of stuff until your are sure about your interest level in the sport. Use items from around the house and from the grocery store at first. You can probably borrow a pack and other things from friends or rent them. Don't overdo the preparations. Just go out and have fun.
