Nine caribou hunters were rescued from ice-locked Coats Island by the Canadian Coast Guard.

The nine hunters left Coral Harbour in two 22-foot aluminum boats. They were waiting out a week's worth of bad weather when the island they were hunting became surrounded by ice. The group tried to get through the ice but were unsuccessful. It was during this attempt that their satellite phone went dead. The group was spotted by aircraft which dropped them a radio, and the plane managed to communicate with them shortly after.

There are many perils in the North especially when ice is in transition. When the caribou are in, people sometimes take some risk to get to them. A lot of meat can be secured in a short amount of time.

Talk about hunting trip gone bad. Wow! I sure am glad they were rescued. You can just about guarantee that will never happen to them again.

This kind of stuff happens a lot in the North. You just don't hear about it. Without the Coast Guard, the hunters would just have to wait a few days (or a few weeks) for a thaw so they could out of there.
