I taught rapelling to more that 100 folks. I told them the first rules of hanging over a cliff was to make sure make sure gear is on right and you are mentally ready. This ol' boy had wrong gear and little brains. He wasn't ready to start and had little chance to finish.
I agree, first rule of survival is to avoid life and death struggle.

If you sign up for a Survival School and it's cancelled for bad weather, you didn't miss much.

The article does not have enough detail to conclude he had the wrong gear. Or the wrong training. Sometimes, when you're way way out there all alone, the worst does happen. It doesn't say he was found dead on a path under normal conditions. It says he froze to death during a bad storm. Yeah, it's possible that he wasn't ready, but it is just as possible that he was ready and ran into conditions few would overcome.

Do not forget that it doesn't matter how tough a person may be. Mother Nature is tougher. She can kill anyone.

It seems that one would try and leave areas like that, if there is no materials to make a shelter or food sources, not enter those areas. In a real situation like that if you got stuck in that area you would immediately try and leave it. Not try to set up shop for a full year. lol.
