Default Desert Hiking

Hello folks. I live in an area that is green most of the year. I am going to take my vacation in New Mexico this year. Does anyone have any desert hiking tips for me?

Know your water sources. Sounds simple but several people die each year because they assumed they knew or thought they carried enough.

Also, while it gets extremely hot in the day, it can get very cold at night.

I would take someone with you. If you are going to hike in an unknown terrain it is a good idea to travel in pairs.

Something I have never done. Don't know how I am going to survive with little water. I would probably bring lemons to sip as they trigger the salivary gland.

Maybe a good hat to shade your head and a wicking material that keeps you cool (like under armour). Try to pack ultra light if you can. Also theres these bandana type of things you can soak in water , they have like gel beads that expand when they soak up the water. You can wrap them around your neck or where ever you want. It does help to keep you cool, I have one. I hate the heat so I try to stay as cool as I can. I drink alot of water , my camelbak holds 3 liters. On real hot days I drink even more.

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture in the lonely shore,
There is a society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but nature more.
Lord Byron (1788-1824)

I just reread this post. When are you going to New Mexico? Desert hiking is not for summer hiking. Of course New Mexico also has some great highland hiking as well. But stay out of the deserts unless the month has an R.

Desert hiking is too dangerous, you'd better have a parthner and have a detail plan.
