Expensive Jackets?!

I just saw some jackets that are above 500 bucks. Who on earth would spend 600 dollars on a jacket, no matter how good it is (besides perhaps expedition professionals)? I wonder who buys such gear?

If you pay $600 for that, I think you are just renting it and it's contents for a few hours.

I laughed when I saw backpacker magazine discussing "rain shells" for $400 each. I'm sorry but I'm not paying that much for a raincoat. My Columbia coat was $200 (got it on sale for less). The inner part comes out leaving a nice rain/wind jacket.

$600 for a hiking jacket... Someones on more crack than Whitney Houston.

There are plenty of rich guys out there, some of whom like to trophy hunt in difficult conditions like Alaska. Some of them operate on the theory that if it is expensive it must be good, and can afford to indulge in such things. Sometimes they like to show off their goods, even though the guys that guide them could never afford such clothing. I like the climbing tradition in Nepal and Tibet where people gift Sherpas and guides clothing. Patagonia is a popular label among Sherpas.
