I am surprised that anyone on this forum would worry about fashion in the backcountry. Socks are very helpful with sandals to prevent blisters and chafing. They keep the feet from drying out and they prevent sunburn. I like to wear long underwear with shorts over the top for river trips and other odd combos because they work. Outdoor fashion should always be driven by what is practical.

Never had a blister problem with sandals. Burning not a problem either except when I a kayak as I tend to paddle with my legs on top of the boat.

Grandma got me a pair of Teva's last year. After a week of wearing them without socks, I took them off and one of the little grandkids piped up with "gee, grandpa has a Jesus tan to go with his farmers tan". None of us has any idea where THAT came from. But we had a little talk about respect.

Fortunately my backcountry fashion style is old and faded so most everything is color coordinated! NO socks with sandals, but the tan marks from my Keens are a little odd!

Ppine, just curious, why the longjohns under shorts! Why not zip off pants?

I look like "Harry off the pickle boat" in my Tilley hat, but I like my hat!

I'm guessing because longjohns don't cost $20 each.

I use polypropylene or some other quality material. They dry fast and are relatively warm. I don't like zippers because they fail and get full of sand. Zip-off pants are not warm enough for river trips with cold water or salt water sea kayaking trips.

Thanks Ppine for explaining the sand in the zipper part. Someone on another site posted a photo of her legs wearing shorts and thermal longjohns underneath so I didn't know if there was a benefit I was missing. I'm used to wearing shorts under rainpants when out on the water or hiking early in the morning.

I hiked a few times in sandals with toes, similar to the Keen H20s (different brand). I was fed up with pebbles and sticks finding their way into the sandal.

Never again. Besides, there are some pretty deep gashes in my leather hiking boots. I'm glad I was wearing them when that happened. Hiking boots for me.
