Default Hiking Boots Or Running Shoes

I know that the real long distance hikers will say hiking boots. But for a shorter distance occasional hiking in the woods or on established trails, wouldn't a good pair of running shoes made for walking be almost as good?

I only wear boots in the winter. Trail shoes for 3 season backpacking for me. Make that 4season when in the dry climes.

I have a pair of expensive high-quality boots in my closet, and can't remember the last time I wore them. I really prefer light weight trail shoes for backpacking, and sometimes just wear my running shoes for day hikes. Others will disagree, of course, but light hikers work for me just fine. If your gym shoes work for you, there's no reason not to wear them.

I prefer hiking boots. I spent a small fortune on my boots and i must say i love them. I used to go hiking with my running shoes, but after i got my new boots i haven't even put the running shoes on. But i guess the boot really needs to feel good if you want to use it regularly.

I wear sneakers if there is no snow. I'm all about sneakers - they are comfortable to me. I don't wear hiking boots ever, they are too warm on my feet. I've never had a problem hiking with all-terrain sneakers.

Actually, a lot of long distance hikers would say running shows are the way to go

If I am doing a day hike I'll just wear whatever is handy. I like the ankle support on the boots when I have the extra weight of the backpack. Many of the trails around here are rocky and have exposed roots, these are hard on the ankles. If I was in a different area where the trails were more consistent I would probably do a hiking shoe when backpacking too.

I like hiking boots, or other kinds of hiking shoes. Running shoes are good for flat surfaces, but I think rough terrain requires a tougher shoe.

That is a good point about wearing hiking boots in rougher terrain for the extra ankle support. I'm glad to hear I'm not way off base about the running shoes though.

I have both but what woman does not love shoes of all types to start with? I keep both because sometimes in the evening hours my feet get a little grumpy with me and I need something soft to walk around the camp in. Hiking though, esp. heavy hiking its all about the boots and ankle support.
