Default Please check before crossing

Something alot of people don't remember to do is to check before stepping into something that looks safe - like a stream or small river or even a bit of marshy land. The thing to remember is that the world is a strange place and even the most safe looking area could be the end of you.

I think probably the most dramatic example is something called the Strid. It's located in Yorkshire and it looks exactly like something you could wade through or hop over, but its not. It's so deep noone has seen the bottom and most bodies are never recovered. The current is monsterous because what you have is the large river upstream turned on its side. I haven't the number of posts that would allow me to post a picture, but you can look it up on google if you like.

Really I have to wonder how many people have gotten hurt simply because they didn't think to check before crossing.

That is one thing I like about hiking poles, if your poles sinks dont take another step.

Funny story along this lines. Had a pup when I was growing up that hated water. Well one day she was chasing a duck that went into a near by lake. Well there was a bunch of grass clippings floating on the top of the water that she thought was grass while chasing it. Well do the math, she was not happy when she found out that was water and not land. haha.

Not only could it be deep, if you were to fall and get injured, it might be worse. I'm sure you all have heard about the girl who was zip-lining, fell, cut a deep gash in her leg and is now fighting for her life. Seems she picked up some kind of flesh eating organism and to date has lost her leg and I think her fingers. Google it for the full story. Bad stuff out there.

That girl is from GA. So far she has lost a leg, the other foot, and here hands. Just a good note on it, there has been lots of support for her with several blood drives and charity events to help with bills in the metro ATL area.

It is always best to check first. For rivers its really simple, get a stick and use it to test how deep it is. Avoid slippery stones and branches to avoid falling.

It seems like she has also lost both hands and her other foot. She also went into a coma for a time, but she seems to be awake and coping fairly well all things considered. But yeah I mean its too easy to end up in this kind of situation when freak accidents happen as they did to this girl, nevermind when you are just walking into situations without checking.

Pole is stick is the best bet. I heard stories growing up and it was not until myself and a cousin were teens out on a boat with the uncle and he dropped a line. I swear it never reached bottom, spooky indeed.

It is not what you see that will kill you; it's what you don't see.

This puts me in mund of something Moms Mabley said. It went something like this:

I see people telling their children to watch the lights before they cross the street. Watch the lights! Watch the lights!

Forget the lights. Watch the cars. The lights don't kill people.

Yeah, my brother was on an aluminum boat with friends on a lake in what they thought was deep water. Well, one of them dropped something in the water, and my brother, being the natural-born fish he is, just dives in head first.....into two feet of water. It's amazing that he didn't break his neck, but the only injury he sustained was a two inch wide gash to his skull from the sharp, pointed rock he dove onto.
