I have never passed out from being dehydrated but I have from a random sugar issue that happened when I was a teen. If either are the same I am sure feeling for your buddy now, the headache after is nuts. Make sure he always drinks up.

I use coffee filters as prefilters and sometimes add a tiny pinch of powdered alum to make the particles in the water clump up and settle out. Then I use chlorine dioxide tablets or drops to disinfect the water. Never had a problem yet. Filters are fine too, but a little slow at times.

I am thinking about getting rid of my MSR and trading it for one tese. Lighter weight can do gravity filter and also is cheaper than replacing the filter in my MSR.

Aquamira Frontier Pro Filter

I worked in the Middle East on and off over the years, hydration is a HUGE issue in that area.
Remember, sodas and most canned/packaged drinks are of no or little use for hydration.
Some in fact are bad for hydration as caffine and aspertine supposedly hinder the bodys ability to absorb water.
Just plain ol' water is best!! Add a little powdered flavor if needed/desired.

When I was stationed in the desert, we were told that for every can of soda or flavored juice you drink, it will take up to a quart of water from your system to break it down and process it. Even when drinking Gatrorade, we were told to drink water afterwards. Gatorade is fine, but if that's all your drinking, you're not getting the most out of it.

Also remember that the bottled and canned beverages you buy are made with what amounts to tap water from wherever they were bottled or canned. So if you're in a country where you wouldn't drink the water from the tap, don't drink any soda made there either.

Except when I've been working a fire and burned up a lot of energy in a short time I try to cut gatorade about 50/50 with plain water. Most of the time I don't need the sugar- it just drives up the blood sugar and then your insulin level and can lead to mild hypoglycemia.
