Lorax speaks well. If you answer those questions, and also mention a price range, you may get some more specific suggestions that will fit your needs very well. My particular needs are for a lightweight, compressible bag, good to about 15 degrees, moderately priced. For me, the down bags by Kelty, Marmot, and perhaps REI or Campmor fit the bill. If I had more cash, I'd be shopping with Western Mountaineering.

I use a synthetic Coleman bag. It's rated down to 40 F, but I've slept in it at around 45 and was a little too hot for comfort in just my boxers. Part of that was that I was on a nice sleeping bad that had good insulation, but I'd be comfortable trying that combination out to freezing.

If you've ever slid off of a sleeping pad, check out Big Agnes.

I second the notion of trying REI. REI has great deals. Plus, you can get year-end money back for buying for REI. It's a great store and a great website.

I love the Kelty brand. I like their design, the reliability and their features. You should look at the Kelty line.
