Thinking that I need to do a backpacking trip. Looking to do this in Sept. or Oct. after the weather cools a bit.

What I am asking you all is for suggestion on where to go. Would like to keep within a days drive 8 to 10 hours of Southern Indiana. Thinking of doing a section of the AT but opening for suggestion for what sections or other ideas. As it stands now local hiking buddies are looking like a no go so this maybe a solo trip. However after chatting with many of you here wondering of any of you would like to meet up and head out for a few days. Not sure if the AT is the best place but was thinking of it as I kind of like the idea of being able to hit a town to resupply instead of packing a weeks worth of food. After all this is a vacation not work.

So any ideas or anyone interested in going. Might be fun to get out with some of the people here that chat together all the time.
Check out the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area right on the KY/TN border. There is a 6 mile loop hike called the Honey Creek Loop that is one of the most entertaining hikes in the Southeast. It has it all, amazing rock formations, stream crossings, boulder scrambling, old growth forests. It is a fairly technical and strenuous hike, but there is so many cool things to keep you entertained that you really don't notice just how strenuous it is. Unlike most of the hikes in the Smokies, there are not many sections of the trail with relentless gradient to climb, just a lot of short, steep, technical ups and downs over some sketchy terrain. You could do the Honey Creek loop as a day hike, and the knock off a section of the John Muir trail that runs through the NRRA.

Well hate to say it but looks like my vacation is off. Will be changing jobs so I wont be taking any time off this year. Its a good thing getting out of the retail pharmacy gig and back into the IT field. Will miss the idea of taking a week or two off work though.

Can you take a trip between jobs?

Wont be any time between jobs. Work old job on a Sunday and start new job on Monday.

It ok though as AI am used to this. Haven't take more than 3 days of at a time in over 3 years. Think that last time I had a full week off work was about 8 to 10 years ago.

Sorry to hear that Wayne. Most of my trips take at least half a day to reach the destination and I'm able to schedule a two week trip quarterly if I play my cards right. One of the benefits of working 12 hour shifts I guess. Don't you ever take a vacation?

Not sure what a vacation is lol. Seems I never have the time and the money at the same time. I can't complain though the new job is back in the IT field doing something that I really like while the old job was really stressing me out. Working as a pharmacy tech is really stressful for some one who doesn't have much faith in the way that modern medicine is going and its financing is going. Leaving the industry will be like a vacation.

Congrats and best of luck with the new job. Also The parts of wayne state forest are not too far from hocking hills and they have trails.

Grandpa would love to get out with you, fridge and some others. Right now getting kind of bored with all the local stuff I have been to so many times. New job will eat half a day on my Saturdays but the stress at work will be dropping a lot. You guys don't forget me I am NOT dodging you just can't get things worked out at the moment where I can go. Good thing though since I will not be working so late anymore going to get into a tennis league and start playing. The regular workout will be good for me.
