BackpackingBackpackers hike into the backcountry to spend one or more nights there, and carries supplies and equipment to satisfy sleeping and eating needs.
Panic is your worst enemy. There are studies that show and prove this. your brain and thinking processes are greatly diminished when you panic. Your entire body will suffer as well. Backpacker Mag had a very strong article on this subject of being lost associated with panic. If I can find it I'll post it. One of the best articles I have ever come across on Panic.
I live to Backpack and I live well..........

So very true Refrigerator. Thats why when I found myself on one of the detours (I never get lost remember) first thing I do is stop and smoke a cigarette and just slowly and causally look at my surroundings. I also remind my self that there is no need to panic I have all the gear I need with me and I always have an extra day if not 2 days of food as well just in case my detour is a longer one. I just figure that if nothing my "detour" just gives me a good excuse to miss work the next day.
I don't mind getting lost while driving - I sometimes find shortcuts and cool stuff on other streets, but when it comes to the woods - sorry, I stick to the beaten path and only go places I know. I am just not that adventurous.

You'll never know what you will find unless you get off the beaten path!
