Default Devil's Tower

Have you ever been to Devil's Tower? I was there a couple years ago and saw people bouldering and climbing the tower to the top. I just hiked around the bottom though.

Devil's Tower is a power spot. It is like a beacon on the plains of Wyo. Native peoples certainly think so. They are not too keen on a bunch of white people from cities far away climbing on their tower.

If memory serves it is a National Monument administered by the NPS. You can get a permit ot climb it.

Just curious, I don't know much about Devils Tower. Is climbing permitted?

Sure, if you have a permit from the NPS you can certainly climb. I totally advise having a go at it at least once.

Where is Devils Tower? I haven't been because I don't know where it is. Sounds like fun though! I'm not one to climb but I love to hike. Are there hiking trails all the way to the top?

Devil's Tower is in Wyoming, maybe an hour or so from the border to South Dakota. It's well worth the trip and you can combine seeing it with a trip over to Mount Rushmore and the rest of the Black Hills area. You can't hike to the top (see the picture below) but there is an easy walking trail around the entire base.

I have relatives in South Dakota. This is a good reason to pay a visit. I could kill two birds with one stone. I think I will leave climbing the tower to others, but the hiking trail at the base sounds doable.

No but it is on the wish list. We both like the idea of having private instructors rather than some random person (or no one at all). I have some distant family out in that area and we are thinking of a week vacation, we would spend half with the family and then head out, the kids would stay with the family.
