Default Lost in Caves?

Spelunking would be interesting but I would be afraid of getting lost while exploring the cave. How do you prevent that from happening?

I generally stick to guided cave tours for this reason.

I've never been that far in a natural cave to worry about it. I have been in old mines and just followed the same way out. I guess if your in a cave with many caverns you might do like they do in cave diving and tie off to something and use a guide line.

This seems very interesting but I think I would be too afraid of getting lost. I would also stick to a guided tour! I also don't like enclosed spaces so this might not even be an option for me anyway.

Never really ventured into caves other than a couple of guided tours. However I am sure there is pently of material out their about how to naviagte in caves. You could also take a few more guided tours and/or trips with some more experienced Spelunker and have ask them questions while down there on how they do it.

Hi...

My preferred way not to get lost in a cave...is to leave a trail of guides behind you.

I'd prefer to have at least one good guide with me... what's behind you is no use.

LOL! It's true though; I had that thought as well but was wondering if it was silly.

The last time I took a cave tour, they were discussing its exploration; apparently the one person who knew where they were fell down, hit his head and got amnesia. They had to find their way out in the dark. As I was marveling at the stupidity of a group of people who would go down in a cave where only one person knew the way back out, I realized we had done exactly the same thing.

I wouldn't go deep enough in a cave to get lost. I think it's smart to take a guide with you too. If you are afraid you should always stick to a guide. Your nerves might cause you to get lost.
