| When I was at Virginia Tech, I went caving with the cave club there a few times. They are very discliplined in their approach to caving. One hard and fast rule was to carry three sources of light. I had an actetylene headlamp, a flashlight, and a candle. We always wore hard hats, too. I don't remember exactly what we did to stay oriented, even when we were mapping out new passages in caves. I'm pretty sure that the ball of string was involved at some point.
