When I was at Virginia Tech, I went caving with the cave club there a few times. They are very discliplined in their approach to caving. One hard and fast rule was to carry three sources of light. I had an actetylene headlamp, a flashlight, and a candle. We always wore hard hats, too. I don't remember exactly what we did to stay oriented, even when we were mapping out new passages in caves. I'm pretty sure that the ball of string was involved at some point.

I hadn't thought about the "getting lost" factor. My fear has always been that I would get trapped in one of those tight openings or get my arm or leg pinned under a rock.

My worry has always been "getting dipped in a puddle of sh*** uhhhh bat guano.

If PRO is the opposite of CON, what is the opposite of Progress?

Your beliefs do not make you a better person, your behavior does.

In all the caves I went in, you were a lot more likely to get covered in mud than bat sh... errr guano.

We had little tubes and inside them is a biodegradable paint. You press the tube to the surface and you hope nobody is fat enough to rub that bad boy off. You also hope that it survives any sudden attacks of water. Everyone had a stick just incase, but only the last man was suppose to use his. The lead man's stick was blue, and the last man's stick was green. All the rest of us had green sticks in reserve for the last man.
