Default Rappelling Gear Weight?

There are some nice cliffs in the area that I'm hiking, especially good for beginners like me and I imagine it would be fun trying to rappel there. How much would a basic gear weigh? I'm already hauling a lot of stuff in my backpack and it would be useful to see it bringing this would be possible at all.

Cliffs, rappeling and beginners do not belong in the same sentence.

Yes, you need someone with you who knows what he/she is doing. I would not try rappelling alone until I had done it several times.

Listen to the posters here. Get some experience with some one who knows the ups and downs and try to find a partner to go with you.

Hi...

I once knew a young fellow who was starting to make a name himself through his rock and cliff climbing...alone...and through some of the fine photos that he took. He seemed very skilled at those endeavers.

He never came back from his last venture, nor was his body ever located.

There is also the Colorado ranger a couple years ago. A very accomplished mountaineer. They found his body at the bottom of a descent he had made many times.

In answer to the original question, I've never backpacked and climbed but have met NOLS groups. I asked the same question because these kids looked in pretty good shape but seemed to be struggling with heavy packs. They said they were carrying about 70 lbs each with their camping gear and their climbing gear.
