Self-guided or on your own

Which do you do more? Self-guided tours or go with a group on a guided tour? I have found that the tour group tours are better. Most times when you go on the self-guided tours you don’t get to see everything. The maps they give you don’t take you in all the smaller areas. If you go with a guide, they pretty much take you everywhere that is safe. Your thoughts?

I have been once and it was a guided tour. It was fun but nothing I would ever try to do alone. I would be afraid of not reading the map right and getting lost for days!

I pretty much do the self guided thing anymore. It used to be different when I was younger. Now I have a bigger appreciation for solitary self guided hikes.

I like to explore. Guided tours do not allow for this.

I think it would really depend on what I want to see and where it is located. More then likely it would be with a group as I think that would be more fun and you would probably see more.

I like to explore too but sometimes they don't allow you to wander in certain area's of a cave (or at least the maps they give you don't show all the areas). I do like to go off on my own though.

I like to find my own way and have never gotten lost yet (knock on wood). I like to go with friends or just with my husband. A group of strangers no way, I like my solitude also. Plus tours are to restrictive, I perfer to make my own choices. One time exploring caves I went in in the morning and didn't come out till dark. I literally spent 24hrs in the dark, it was great. Where can you do that on a tour.

I'd personally go with a guided tour, especially if it's my first time exploring the area. It may not be as exciting as exploring on your own, but at least you're less likely to get lost.
