I have never done any rock climbing, though I have known people who do it. Honestly, I'm not sure what people see in it. Is it just the sheer challenge of it, or the rush that comes from doing something dangerous, or what?

I don't know why people like it. I have trouble with heights anyway. I have to make sure I face a steep hill when I'm climbing up it and never look back or I get severe vertigo. I don't mind as long as I don't look, but once I've looked, I'm doomed.
I can see the appeal of it - I wish I had the guts to do it. It's like a rush I am sure. I would love to try the underwater kind - where you go in underwater caves!
I've often wondered myself why people like to climb such steep rocky cliffs. Just one wrong move and it could be the end. I think that is a 'rush' that I can do without.
I do not think most climbers climb for the "rush". Most climbers I know climb for the physical and mental challenge of playing on the rock. You have to think to figure out the way up. I know folks who just enjoy the dance up the rock. Some call it a dance cause it is a combination of balance and movement.
Also, if done properly climbing is safer than the drive there. If you are in a situation where one wrong move could be the end you probably are doing something wrong.
