LOL Oldsarge! I got a Columbia straw hat this Spring to wear on the water. Looks like something Sam Snead would wear, and my wife hates it, but it does the job of keeping the sun off. I hate getting sunburned!

I just like the ventilation the straw provides- it's a heckuva lot cooler than my old reliable felt hat.

At 56 I hardly feel like a kid anymore, anyhow.

It's been a long while since I went kayaking (1989). Yesterday a buddy of mine and I went and did some kayaking for a few hours. I was sure to put sun screen on my face and arms, but neglected to apply it to my legs (Dufuss), now the inside areas by my calf and part of my shin are all burned up. Will I ever learn?

Ouch! Tender spots to get burned, too!

I usually don't trek very far,
when my body parts sunburned are.

Hi...

I've been badly sunburned many times...usually in my younger years. I've also been burned via other means (gasoline explosion). On my last float fishing trip in the Delaware River, I neglected to put sun screen on the TOPS of my hands.

That was kinda like the straw that broke the camel's back...ever since that day, the back of my hands are now a permanent pink in color. Don't ask me why...just happened. The backs of my hands are now also permanently "alligatored". An EMT told me that it also makes tha backs of my hands harder to insert an IV.

Long sleeves, long pants and a hat with a brim. I have had two skin cancer surgeries but still love to be on the water. Sunscreen may be over rated.

All those years of getting a few burns in the spring to build up a tan have cost me in my 60s. Mountain lakes are the worst because of the elevation. I live at 5,000 ft and lakes are more like 5,800 to 8,000 feet.

Hi...

Wide brimmed hat.
Proper sunglasses.
Clothing with an SPF factor.
Adequate sun screen...BEFORE the sun hits you.
And, don't forget to put some on any other exposed body parts, like the backs of your hands.

Back in 81 I was fishing in Panama....drinking too. Remembered to load up on the sun screen and did a great job of keeping myself coated. part way through the day my sneakers got wet and I pull them off, never giving it another thought, I spent several hours having a good old time. By that afternoon I could feel that my feet were burnt. Of course all the rum I was pounding down made it feel not so bad. I woke up the next morning with sun poisoning. My feet were so swelled up that I couldn't even slip on a shower shoe, they were all purple and red. Worse four days I can remember while trying to get around.

in 1972 I was a lifeguard, and the first day on the stand, I spent 6 hours in the full sun. I was too stupid to wear sunscreen, and it wasn't really all that available them anyhow.

That evening the tops of my thighs and the tops of my feet were lobster red, and I spent the evening in a tub of cold water. after a day or so I peeled off the tops of my thighs in one large sheet for each one! It was the worst i'd ever been burned, and taught me a great lesson.
