Default Buy or Hire a Sail Boat

I'm thinking of buying a sail boat for my own to use. There are some boats that are for rent in my area and I'm thinking that I might want to try that first. I think that I need to learn how maintain a boat first before buying my own.

I think you are right on with this one. I would rent them first and take lessons on how to handle them. What if you don't enjoy it, that way you wouldn't be stuck with a boat. You would just not rent it again.

I completely agree with ATVfan. If you haven't really been sailing, taking a few lessons would definitely be a wise course of action. At the very least, you can get the feel for it and an idea of just how big of a boat you want.
