Default Capsized Boat

I just heard on our scanner that a boat had been found capsized at one of our local lakes. They did find the guy on the shore, he was really cold but he was fine. Unfortunately, all of his gear is now at the bottom of the lake but he's alive. Poor dude.

Well I think at that point I would just be happy that I made it to shore alive. That must have been a horrible experience. Hope he had insurance so that his fishing equipment was covered.

Don't turn your back on big lakes or bad weather. Last November I was fishing with my brother on Lake Almanor, CA a big mountain lake. All at once, the wind direction changed and freshened to about 20-25 knots. We hauled in our trolling gear and headed straight for the boat ramp about 8 miles away. It started to snow in earnest. Spray was coming over the bow. We could not see shore, and could only see forward with a windshield wiper. We had a chart, depth sounder, compass and good canvas on boat with a deep hull. We got home fine, but pity the person who was not prepared, or had a few too many beers in such a situation. It is how people get dead.

I was visiting a friend up in Gaylord, MI who's an EMT. This was early April, and the days were fairly warm, but Otsego lake there was still frigid. A couple of guys went out fishing at night and managed to capsize. We heard the call over her pager. Neither one had on a PFD. One of them made it ashore and broke into a cabin there and called 911. The other one didn't make it. It took a Coast Guard copter with searchlight to find his body.

ALWAYS wear your PFD, especially in cold water. ALWAYS let someone know where you're going and when you'll be back. DON'T drink when you're out on the water.

It only takes a second for the worst to happen.

Do not understand why people don't ware a PFD on any water when it's cold or in cold water when it is warm out.Even 50 to 60 deg water it dosen't take long for 98.6 to drop!Coma, dead, fish food.Even 70 deg. water will suck your heat out in time.

Default Funny story about our capsize

We cartwheeled a hobi cat in February and someone called the coast guard. We made it back to our dock and they showed up and asked to see our life jackets. We yelled in unison, "LIFE JACKETS!" and reeled in a sock tied to a rope with a hole in the top that held a bottle of Jack Daniels! They didn't think it was as funny as we did!

Tule,

You may be the only people who thought it was funny.

Alcohol on the water can not only kill you but it can kill an innocent family!

People tend to take water for granted. It can be treacherous even on the best of days. You never know when it's going to turn on you and kill you very dead.
